The Woman Behind the Story
Cheryl Marie Carrington:
The woman who started all of this, was a mother, a sister, a daughter, and an aunt; and Mia Carrington was her neice. At the time Cheryl was born, the doctors barely knew what sickle cell was. They misdiagnosed, treated for illness she didn't have, and referred her to many different hospitals and doctors. Her life was a constant struggle against fighting this disease which she unfortunately lost to in September 2000. She was told she couldn't do many things, such as have a child; but she did anyway. Her strong nature helped her through the worse of times.
Ever since Mia's sophmore year she knew she wanted dedicate her senior project to raising awareness for this disease in memory of her aunt. Her research paper incorporates the story of Cheryl Carrington, while explaining possible treatments to this disease. The action plan incorporates the education of kids as well as adults to prevent this disease from potentially spreading. By educating others, lives will be saved from enduring the pains and stresses of this disease.
