Children's Book
To reach out to children and educate them about Sickle Cell Anemia, Mia wrote a children's book named Nina's story. The book explained the basics of sickle cell anemia as well as the major symptoms and affects of the disease. On April 20th, 2012 she read her book at Tallwood Elementary School to a 2nd grade class; and on April 26th, 2012 she read at Centerville Elementary to her younger sister's 3rd grade class. Following the reading was a short question and answer about sickle cell anemia. The children who answered the questions right were able to be the first to color the pages of the book (all the pages were left uncolored for the children to color). About a week after reading the book to both classes Mia asked the teachers to tell their students to write what they learned from the story, and the response was greater than expected. Most of the children remembered the story vividly after a week and was able to recite majority of the pages from the book; including information about sickle cell.
